There are many forms of diseases that can occur in the bed of the nail. Some of the most common are:
Paronychia - an infection caused by bacteria, fungi and some viruses. It occurs in the lateral nail folds when bacterium enter the seal that protects the nail. It occurs in people who have their hand submerged in water for extended periods of time and it is considered contagious.
Pseudomonas- occurs between the nail plate and the nail bed. It is a bacterial infection that thrives in moist or humid places. The green discoloration of the nail is a key indicator of this disease.
Onychogryposis -also known as an “ingrown toenail”. The plate of the nail will curve inward, pinches the nail bed and can even require surgical excision of the nail.
