At Feinstein Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery in Delray Beach, FL, our providers are committed to providing our patients with the most effective and up-to-date skin treatments. Photodynamic (PDT) therapy is one such regimen. PDT combines scientifically proven light and chemical based treatments to provide unprecedented results for a variety of skin ailments and conditions. You can learn more about PDT here.
How does PDT work?
While chemical treatments and laser light therapies work well on their own, they have their limitations. But with photodynamic therapy, these two treatments are combined to make one highly effective, non-invasive remedy. By applying a special photosensitizing solution to your skin an hour or more before your treatment, your Delray Beach dermatologist is making the targeted skin cells more responsive to the light therapy. In just one or two treatments, you may achieve healthier and more youthful-looking skin.
What does PDT treat?
PDT has many benefits that have been well-documented. Inflammatory conditions such as acne and rosacea respond very well to the combination of light and chemicals. Sun-damaged skin is also greatly improved using this method. Even precancerous conditions such as actinic keratosis, some of which may be too small to be seen, can be targeted and removed. PDT not only treats these medical problems; it also offers cosmetic benefits, leaving the skin smoother and more even-toned with no scarring.
What happens after PDT?
The proper aftercare of photodynamic therapy is very important. Because the chemical solution makes the skin extremely sensitive to light and remains active for a time, your Delray Beach dermatologist will give you specific instructions to avoid sunlight in any form for at least 48 hours after your appointment. Sunscreen, hats, scarves and sunglasses should be worn to protect the treatment area, which will be prone to redness and peeling for up to a week following your PDT therapy.
