We live in beautiful, sunny South Florida, where the sun’s rays are plentiful. But there’s a darker side to those rays, which can be unforgiving at times: skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Most skin cancers are caused by too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun or commercial tanning maps and tanning beds.

Common Types of Skin Cancer

The two most common forms of skin cancer are Basal cell carcinoma (BCC), which accounts for 75 to 80 percent of skin cancer, and Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), which accounts for 16 to 20 percent. They are usually very treatable.

Treatment Options

Treatment options for skin cancer are based on a variety of factors including location on the body, patient’s age, and type of skin cancer. One of the most comprehensive treatments with the highest cure rate is Mohs surgery (microscopically controlled surgery).  Due to the sophistication of this procedure, doctors are required to undergo additional years of training to become a certified Mohs surgeon.  Mohs surgery is accepted as the gold standard for treating the cancers.

Not all doctors that perform Mohs surgery are certified so you want to make sure yours is. At Feinstein Dermatology, not only is Dr. Brian Feinstein, a board-certified dermatologist, he is also a certified Mohs surgeon by the American Society for Mohs Surgery. Dr. Feinstein personally performs this outpatient surgery in the comfort of our office.

What Happens During Mohs Surgery?

The surgery or technique is performed under local anesthesia and is done in stages in one visit.  It involves removing the skin cancer one tissue layer at a time. After removing each layer of tissue, Dr. Feinstein carefully examines it under a microscope in our on-site CLIA certified, state-of-the-art lab. If any cancer cells remain, Dr. Feinstein knows their exact location and removes another layer of tissue from that precise area. This process saves as much normal, healthy skin as possible. He repeats this process until no cancer cells remain.

How Effective is Mohs Surgery?

Mohs surgery is the most effective technique for treating these types of skin cancers. This surgery can offer cure rates of up to 99 percent. It virtually eliminates the chance of cancer growing back. Like most surgeries, Mohs surgery leaves a scar, while sparing as much healthy tissue as possible. Generally, all post-surgical scars improve with time and we will continue to see you at regular visits to evaluate.

chemical peel benefitsThink of it as peeling away or reversing the signs of aging. The signs of aging naturally become more prominent as we age – we’re talking wrinkles, fine lines, and more.  But you can do something about that, without surgery. Chemical peels work, and for more than aging concerns.  Here at Feinstein Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery in Delray Beach, chemical peels is one of our specialties in our Aesthetic Center.

Chemical peels are a fan favorite here, and we’re not alone in that affinity.  According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, they’re among the top five cosmetic minimally invasive procedures performed in 2017.  They address a wide range of skin issues, and that’s just one of the many The Benefits of Chemical Peels.

What Are Chemical Peels?

A chemical peel is a skin resurfacing treatment that will improve collagen production and give you smoother, regenerated skin. It involves an aesthetician applying a chemical solution to your skin, which causes it to exfoliate and eventually peel off – hence the name chemical peel.  The cosmetic treatment can be applied to the face, neck, and hands.

The Many Benefits of Chemical Peels

There are many reasons why chemical peels are so popular.  For starters, they can address and help improve several skin conditions and concerns, including the following:

  • Fine Lines and Wrinkles
  • Acne or Acne Scars
  • Irregular Skin Pigmentation
  • Rough Skin and Scaly Patches
  • Certain Scars
  • Sun-damaged Skin

Types of Chemical Peels

There are basically three types chemical peels, addressing various needs, and when determining which peel would work best for you, we take into consideration your skin type, your desired outcome or aesthetic goals, and your lifestyle. Here are the kinds of peels:

  • Light Peel (or lunchtime peel): Dryness, acne or fine wrinkling, uneven pigmentation
  • Medium Peel: Acne scars, uneven skin color
  • Deep Peel: Facial wrinkles, sun-damaged skin, scars, blotchiness, pre-cancerous growths

Quick Results

Results can vary, depending on different factors, but overall, chemical peels can give you quick results. And while the results might not be permanent, you can help protect your new skin by moisturizing properly and always protect your skin from the sun’s harsh rays.

Realistic Goals of Chemical Peels

Let’s talk expectations and aesthetic goals. Chemical peels are excellent at regenerating your skin cells and literally giving your skin new life. However, there are some skin issues that a chemical peel cannot address. They don’t work for deep facial lines or wrinkles, nor do they significantly tighten loose or sagging skin, and they don’t work for removing deep scars.

With any cosmetic procedure – either nonsurgical or surgical, you have to manage expectations. And that’s one of the reasons you need to work with an experienced dermatologist office - Feinstein Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery in Delray Beach, for a chemical peel.

It’s the new year – the perfect time to start creating the new you. If you don’t like what you see in the mirror, it’s simple – do something about it. If you’re beginning to notice more fine lines and wrinkles, so is everyone else. But it’s not about them. It’s about you, and your desire to rejuvenate your skin.

We can definitely help you with that, here at Feinstein Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery in Delray Beach.  Anti-aging treatments are one of our passions, and the minimally invasive procedure - facial injectables, which help to diminish fine lines and wrinkles and restore volume and fullness are just what the doctor is not ordering but is highly recommending. The result is a more youthful appearance.

Injectables Are Very Popular

As a society, we can’t get enough of the injectables. In a report released last year by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the two categories of facial injectables – Botulinum Toxin (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin) and Soft Tissue Fillers, also known as dermal fillers led the way in the top five minimally invasive procedures performed in 2017. Both grow more popular, each year.

Try Botox to Target Wrinkles

Botox is a treatment that can temporarily smooth or reduce facial fine lines and wrinkles, on the brows, forehead and around the eyes (crow’s feet). It can also be used to lift the corners of the mouth and soften a square jawline. Here’s how it works: a licensed aesthetician injects the substance in target areas of the skin. The injections block nerve impulses, and weakens muscles, relaxes wrinkles and give the face a rejuvenated look.  You’ll start to notice an improvement within days, and its effect can last four to six months. If you’re wondering how to get rid of deep creases, you now have the answer: Botox.

The Beauty of Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are also called wrinkle fillers. These gel-like injectables are typically made from hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the body that helps the skin maintain hydration. The procedure involves an aesthetician the substances right beneath the skin. Dermal fillers soften facial creases and wrinkles and enhance shallow contours. They can also be used to plump thin lips. The time in which you’ll start seeing results, along with the length of time the effects will last, varies, dependent upon the brand of dermal filler used, as well as the area of your face that was targeted in the procedure.  For example, Restylane will last about 6 or seven months, while Juvederm can last from six months to two years.

The Difference Between Dermal Fillers and Botox

Both Botox and dermal fillers are excellent at fighting the signs of aging, but there are distinct differences between the two. For starters, Botox is more of a facial muscle relaxer, and targets wrinkles, reducing their movement and visibility. While on the other hand, dermal fillers will help target those wrinkles that are always present on your face, even when your face is relaxed. And unlike Botox, dermal fillers help plump more volume into your face.

Wrinkles Be Gone!

Many people often want to know how to get rid of wrinkles. Facial injectables is a great start. When you come into the office for a consultation, Dr. Brian Feinstein, a board-certified dermatologist, will personally discuss all the available alternatives to find what treatments would be best for your skin type and your lifestyle.
